HEIC uses HEVC compression, which packs the same visual quality into roughly half the storage space of a JPG. If you're archiving a large photo library, backing up to cloud storage with limited space, or moving photos onto an iPhone where HEIC is native, converting to HEIC first can meaningfully cut storage and transfer costs.
The tradeoff is compatibility: HEIC isn't universally supported outside Apple's ecosystem and some newer Windows/Android tools, so keep this in mind if the files need to be opened elsewhere.

The quality slider controls the HEVC compression level used when encoding. 80 is a strong default: most photos show no visible difference from the original JPG. Push it toward 100 if the image has fine detail you want to preserve exactly (documents, screenshots with text), or lower it toward 60 if file size matters more than fidelity.
